Back to School Box of Chocolates

Teaching is like a box of chocolates, you never know.... well you know the rest. You walk in on day 1 and surprise! You have 3 kids who can already read and comprehend fluently. You have a kid who doesn't know his really name and swears his name is Pookie. Your class contains far too many children who pick their noses and 5-6 who have no idea how to hold a pencil and know nothing about writing the letters in their name. ("Wait, there are letters in my name...") So as teachers we do all we can to prepare for those first few days of school, because you really have to be ready for ANYTHING. I find I go crazy organizing for the new school year during my 2 1/2 month unpaid teacher planning (I mean summer break). What kinds of things do you have to have organized before you go back to school to not feel overwhelmed by the new school year?

I have just created this homework/classwork pack for the #TPTSellerChallenge in hopes of being more organized.  It is 38 pages of math and literacy to cover a wide variety of needs for your kindergarten room.

    1. Some of the things I do to be prepared for BTS - print and laminate all of my stuff for August and September month; prep the classroom; organize resources and files for the first two months and I also use a BTS checklist to ensure that I have covered most of the important stuff. :)

    2. Wow, that sounds like me, especially the checklist (and then during teacher planning week there is a new checklist each day). Thanks for your input and your support. Your pack is on it's way. :)

  2. Hi, just stopping by from the seller challenge. What a fab blog, and a great product for the challenge!

To get ready for the school year I write hundreds of lists but mainly I sort out my classroom order and displays and work out first week's lessons.

    Fab blog :)

  3. I like to have name labels, work basket stations and visual schedules ready for my students before the first day. I teach Special Ed and sometimes I don't find out who is in my class till the last minute! Then I am really scrambling!

    1. Wow, having ESE kids and not knowing who you will have until the last minute seems stressful. I can understand scrambling because of that. I don't teach ESE but I have had the same problems; getting a class list Thursday or Friday and the kids start on Monday. (Side note, since I didn't want to spend a precious hour the last day before the kids walked in making name tags I created these computerized ones. Type, print and go.) Also, I need your e-mail address to be able to send this too you. If you don't want to post it you can just e-mail it to me at burke.kerry@gmail.com. Thanks again for visiting my blog!

  4. This is a great variety of resources for those first days. Great job. Add to your list, 1 student who speaks no English. That is always fun in Kdg when I don't speak Spanish. Organized... yeah, not me. I gave up trying years ago. :)

    1. Thanks, I can't believe I left out ELL students from that list. It has actually been a few years since I have had students who speak no English. My class last year however did have 1/3 that English was their second language (mainly Creole as the first). Well not being organized works for you then I want to be more like that. It would save me a good deal of time. :) I checked out your blog, it is really cute! I also teach in Florida, Broward County to be exact. Also, I need your e-mail address to be able to send this to you. If you don't want to post it, you can just e-mail it to me at burke.kerry@gmail.com. Thanks again for visiting my blog!

  7. Hello! Stopping by from the seller challenge. I'm a new teacher and have an interview next week for a full time position! I worked as a TA last year in K and fell in love with it. Your pack is perfect for the beginning of the school year! Thank you for creating such awesome printables! I'm currently trying to prepare things for my future classroom that will fit regardless of what grade I end up teaching.

  8. Hi Jen,
Thanks for stopping by! Best of luck with your interview! I LOVE Kindergarten! (and to tell you the truth I always wanted to teach intermediate grades. I cried 10 years ago when I got placed in Kindergarten. Once I got used to it, there was no looking back!) I appreciate the kind words! I hope you will find it to be useful!
